Woman in desperate need of relief for chronic sinus infections. Is surgery her only option?

When is severe Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery Necessary?

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS), is only needed when there is plumbing problem in your nose. The severity can be determined through a complete examination, including a CT scan. If you have yet to receive a full assessment of your symptoms and root causes of your sinusitis, surgery should not be on your to-do list.

Your sinus problems could be caused by a wide variety of issues, from allergies to a blockage in your sinus pathways. Each condition is likely to have multiple options to correct the issue without surgery.

Don’t settle for surgery if it’s not your only option. Schedule an appointment with Dr. Gilmore from North Texas Sinusitis Center today to learn if you can avoid surgery AND experience relief from a non-invasive or minimally-invasive surgery alternative.

What is Endoscopic Sinus Surgery?

Endoscopic sinus surgery, which is commonly recommended to resolve chronic sinusitis, is a procedure to surgically remove sinus blockages.

With knowledge of where the blockages are in the sinuses, the doctor will remove bone and/or tissue that is causing the blockage in your air pathways. With the help of an endoscope, which is placed inside your nose, tools are then used to cut through the tissue or bone.

After recovering from the procedure the patient should be able to breathe better out of their nose and avoid further complications associated with their sinus issues, including chronic sinusitis, congestion, and related symptoms.

What to Expect During Recovery

Full recovery from sinus surgery can take months, although you may experience relief and healing sooner. Immediate recovery includes healing from the cuts and removed tissue and can consist of pain, congestion, headaches, bleeding, and scabbing.

Scar tissue could complicate the effectiveness of your sinus surgery; scabs will need to be removed by your doctor through a process called debridement.
